Wellington is New Zealand's centre of government and the world's southernmost capital city. It also New Zealand's cultural capital.

Botanic Garden
Established in 1868 and managed by the New Zealand Institute. The Wellington Botanic Garden features 25 hectares of unique landscape, protected native forest, conifers, specialized plant collections, colourful floral displays, and views over Wellington city. It is classified as a Garden of National Significance by the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture and is an Historic Places Trust Heritage Area.

Cable Car
Operating since 1902, Wellington's beautifully restored flaming red cable car, a vital commuter link between Lambton Quay and the leafy inner-city suburb of Kelburn. This is a favourite inclusion in the typical Wellington itinerary providing easy access to the Botanic Gardens and sweeping panoramic views of the city. This is a popular form of transport for the thousands of students attending Victoria University.

Cuba Street
This is downtown's creative quarter with its eclectic array of old and new shops, galleries, restaurants, bars and cafes and slightly rundown aura. A part of the street has been a pleasant place to amble or take coffee al fresco and closed off to cars. The kids will like the beloved bucket fountain that could splatter those getting too close anytime and a small children's playground.

Civic Square
A tribute to the city's town planners, architects and artists, this splendid open space, used regularly for recreation and entertainment, bounded by interesting places such as the City to Sea Bridge, the City Gallery, and Central Library. Look out for the suspended spherical fern sculpture and the wonderful nikau palms and combining terra cotta tiles, trees and water features which makes natural draw card for visitors.

Wellington City Library
Most distinctive and exciting modern building in Wellington. It houses a fabulous collection of books, newspapers, magazines, videos, tapes and compact discs spread over three large floors. There is a wonderful children's corner which offers Pre-School Story Time and on the mezzanine floor an excellent cafe and bookstore. Ample parking available below the building and all sorts of interesting contemporary New Zealand art around it. Admission is free.

Karori Wildlife Sanctuary
Is a world's first conservation attraction where a unique protected natural area is being patiently restored. It is a safe haven for endangered native birds and other wildlife, located few minutes from downtown Wellington. This world-first conservation attraction is an inspiring place to visit and learn about New Zealand's unique wildlife. Some of New Zealand's rarest and most endangered wildlife has been released inside the Sanctuary like the little spotted kiwi, tuatara, saddleback, stitchbird and kaka.

Colonial Cottage Museum
Centrally Wellington's oldest building, built as a family home by William Wallis in 1858. The Cottage relates the story of family life in colonial Wellington; a time when nails were still imported into the country and candles were made from meat fat. The Cottage's displays show the ways in which the first colonials blended their lives from their Victorian homeland with the dictates of a new country. The museum features a gift shop, parking and toilets.

Kapiti Island Nature Reserve
Kapiti is one of New Zealand’s few relatively accessible island nature reserves, and it is the only large island sanctuary for birds between Hauraki Gulf in the north and New Zealand’s southern outlying islands.Nature reserves are areas set aside for the protection of native plants and animals, where human influence is kept to a minimum. It provides an opportunity for people to observe birds that are either very rare or absent from the mainland, and to see the recovery of vegetation after intensive modification during last century.
